European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
