Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution After Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the recommended threshold established by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, equating to 15-20x exceeding safe standards.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that blankets the city as colder weather approaches.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected city administration appealed to the highest court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Court Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, judges complied with the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the capital have remained as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the environment has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the peak readings ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Medical and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in cancer.

The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand early fatalities annually in the capital.
